There are many ways to shop in the U.S. Many Americans frequent large, enclosed shopping malls in the suburbs of bigger cities. Some of these malls are enormous; they contain restaurants, department and specialty stores, and sometimes movie theatres.
In large cities, there are downtown shopping districts, although most shoppers go to discount department stores in the suburban areas.
While shopping in a department store, a salesperson will often come up to you and ask if he/she can help you find something. If you prefer to be left alone you can say, “I’m just looking”. If you need help, the salesperson will show the items you are interested in. Many times there are sales or discounts. You will probably see signs to this effect.
Never try to bargain in a department store. In the U.S. bargaining over a price goes on only at flea markets and yard sales. Americans also haggle over a price when buying a very expensive item such a house or a car.

Salesperson: Are you being helped?
You: No, I’m not. I’m looking for gifts for my children, possibly T-shirts.
Salesperson: For a girl or a boy?
You: Both. I have a son and a daughter.
Salesperson: What sizes do you need?
You: I guess I’ll need a large for my son and a medium for my daughter.
Salesperson: What about the color?
You: I think I’ll get a light green T-shirt for my daughter and a navy blue for my son. Are they easy to care of?
Salesperson: Yes, they’re machine-washable and shouldn’t fade or shrink very much.
You: Fine, I’ll take two T-shirts.
Salesperson: How about something for your husband?
You: Not right now. I’m going to look more. Where’s the fine jewelry department?
Salesperson: Right over there, to the left.

You walk to the large supermarket in your neighborhood. Once inside, you see shoppers pushing grocery carts. So, you grab one and do likewise.
You head for the fresh fruit and vegetables aisle.
Produce Clerk: Good morning. Can I weigh those for you?
You: Yes. And how much are the tomatoes?
Produce Clerk: Eighty cents a pound. How many would you like?
You: Three will be enough. I also want this head of lettuce. How much do I owe you?
Produce Clerk: Oh, you don’t pay here. You pay at the checkout counter when you leave.
You: Sorry about that.
You browse through the supermarket, stopping at the meat counter.
Butcher: Can I help you?
You: I’d like a chicken, please.
Butcher: Would you like it whole or cut up?
You: A whole fryer, please. I’ll cut it up myself. Thanks.
A bit later, you go to the bakery.
Baker: Yes, ma’am?
You: I’d like a loaf of bread, please.
Baker: Do you want rye, whole wheat, or white bread?
You: I’ll take the rye bread.
You pay for you groceries at the checkout counter.

How much is it? $ 29.95
Twenty-nine ninety-five sau twenty-nine dollars and ninety-five cents
What does it cost? $ 100.00
One hundred dollars.

Affirmative Interrogative Negative

I would Would I I would not
You would Would you You would not
He would Would he He would not
She would Would she ? She would not
It would Would it It would not
We would Would we We would not
You would Would you You would not
They would Would they They would not

Scrie şi vorbeşte corect:
 În engleza britanică la persoana I sg. şi plural, foloseşte-l, în loc de would, pe should. I should come (Aş veni) şi We should come (Am veni).
La afirmativ, I’D [aid], YOU’D [yud], HE’D [hid], SHE’D, WE’D [wid], YOU’D [yud], THEY’D. La negativ forma scurtă a lui would not este WOULDN’T [wudnt]

 Hai să conjugăm împreună verbul “to answer” - “a răspunde”:

I like my secretarial work. I had the chance to find this job at the Starling Co. – a company trading in shirt co-ordinates. To get this job I had to attend a two-year secretarial course and so I got the diploma, my suitable qualification for the job.
The company is a small one. It has about 50 employees. Mr. John Spencer is our managing director. Helen Young is the personnel manager and Fred Lampoon is the sales manager. Margie Brown is our merchandiser. I am Mary Lean and I was hired as a personnel secretary to Mr. John Spencer.
The brief of my job is to be at the office 15 minutes before 9:00 a.m. I open the mail about 9:30, then I have to take shorthand in the managing director’s office for an hour or so. I make the coffee and do most of the typing, and of course, I answer the phone. I usually go to the telex room after lunch break. I make tea at four, and from four to five I fax the letters or do the filling. I am not a watchclocker, and therefore, I never leave the office on the dot.
Mr. Spencer says I am an efficient and helpful secretary. Of course, I have to be polite. I can organise my job quite well. I speak two foreign languages fluently.
I do the petty cash reporting each week. The money I add up comes in my report to my under four headings: travels, postage, stationary and sundries (all others). Mr. Spencer always wants to know what the petty cash is spent on. You see I don’t find my secretarial work boring. I really enjoy it.

Dick: Are you very busy at the office?
Jack: Of course, I am. Yesterday, for example, I had a lot of things to do. In the morning, I had to look through the mail and answer some business letters and telegrams, then…
Dick: Does it take you long to do it?
Jack: No, it doesn’t. Generally that takes me about an hour.
Dick: Do you type your letter yourself?
Jack: No, I don’t. I dictate the answers to a shorthand typist who then types them. Then, I take the letters together with some other papers to the manager’s office, for the manager to sign them. If the manager is engaged or is out, attending a conference or a meeting, I leave the papers with his secretary. Or, sometimes, I have to see the manager to ask him for further instructions.

Many Americans live in apartment buildings, especially young adults and people whose income is either low or fixed. Generally speaking, it is less expensive to rent an apartment than to own a house. Advantages include the fact that you are not responsible for upkeep of the apartment, the building, or the grounds. Disadvantages are that you have little control over increases in your rent and that you are not building up any equity in your property.
When renting you will probably be asked to sign a lease, which is a sort of contract obligating you to pay rent for a fixed period of time (normally a year). You will also be asked to pay two month’s rent at the outset or some form of security deposit in case of damage to the apartment.
In most cases, the cost of water and sewerage is included in your rent. You will have to pay the other utilities, such as electricity, gas, and telephone.
You look through the classified ads in newspaper, then start calling.

You: Hello, I’m calling about an apartment. I’d like to rent a furnished, two-bedroom place.
1st apartment Manager: We have one furnished apartment left. It’s air-conditioned and rents for $575 per month.
You: Are the utilities included?
1st apartment Manager: The water is, but not the gas and electricity.
You: That’s a little more than I wanted to pay. Thanks anyway.
You hang up and call another apartment complex.
2nd apartment Manager: Hello, Breezeway Manor Apartments, how may I help you?
You: Do you have a furnished, two-bedroom apartment in the $400 range?
2nd apartment Manager: Yes, you’re in luck. One just came open today. It goes for $450 per month, including water.
You: Is it the first or the second floor?
2nd apartment Manager: The first floor. It’s very close to our swimming pool. Shall I hold it for you? I’ll need one month’s rent as a deposit as soon as possible.
You: Yes, please do. I’ll be right over.

After speaking to the apartment manager, you decide to visit the complex. You meet the apartment manager in front of the buildings for a tour of premises.
Apt. Manager: Good morning. Are you ready to see the apartment?
You: Yes. Let’s go inside.
Apt. Manager: We’ll start with the kitchen and dining room.
You: Oh, good, a refrigerator and stove. Is there a dishwasher, too?
Apt. Manager: It’s right over here, next to the sink. There’s also a garbage disposal and a trash compactor.
You: I’d like to take a look at the bedrooms and bath.
You walk through the living room, which contains a sofa, several armchairs, tables and a TV set. There is wall-to-wall carpeting throughout.

Apt. Manager: Here are the bedrooms. They’re connected by the bathroom. There’s also a half bath off the living room. Which bedroom will you use?
You: I like the one facing the pool. I’ll use the other one for my study. Can I get a desk and chair for my study?
Apt. Manager: I’ll call the office and see if there are any in storage.
You realize that although your apartment is furnished throughout, you have no food in your kitchen.
You: I don’t have a car. Is there a grocery store nearby?
Apt. Manager: You’re in luck. There’s a supermarket down the street. It’s about a ten-minute walk. Let’s go back to my office and talk about your lease.

Nominativ Acuzativ
(pe cine?) Dativ
(cui?)
I me pe mine, mă (to) me mie, îmi, mi
You you pe tine, te, pe dvs. (to) you ţie, îţi, ţi, dvs.
He him pe el, îl (to) him lui, îi, i
She her pe ea, o (to) her ei, i
It it pe el, îl, pe ea, o (to) it lui, îi, ei, i
We us pe noi, ne (to) us nouă, ne, ni
You you pe voi, vă, pe dvs (to) you vouă, vă, vi, dvs.
They them pe ei, îi, pe ele, le (to) them lor, le, li

 Citeşte cu voce tare următoarele exemple:

I write a letter to her! Îi scriu o scrisoare! (cui?, D)

Let us know when you come back! Anunţă-ne când te întorci! (pe cine? Ac)
Show them what they have to do. Arată-le ce trebuie să facă. (cui? D)

Scrie şi vorbeşte corect:
1. Ţine minte că în engleză ordinea cuvintelor in propoziţiile afirmative este SUBIECT + PREDICAT + COMPLEMENT INDIRECT (cui?) + COMPLEMENT DIRECT (ce?)
3. Nu incurca situaţiile când trebuie să-l foloseşti pe “I” şi situaţiile în care trebuie să-l foloseşti pe “me”. Adu-ţi întotdeauna aminte că “I” este subiect şi “me” este complement.

Mary and me go to the Fair.
Mary and I go to the Fair. The manager speaks to Mary and I. 
The manager speaks to Mary and me.

Who?

Whose books are those? (adj.)

Nu-mi amintesc cui i-am dat pixul meu.
Ac whom?
who? pe cine? Whom do you speak to? (pron.)
Who do you speak to? (pron.)
Cu cine vorbeşti?

What?

What is she? Ce este ea? (pron.)
What poet is your favourite? Ce poet este favoritul tău? (adj.)
What can you see in this picture? Ce vezi în acest tablou? (pron.)
What colour is your car? Ce culoare este maşina ta? (adj.)
What comes next? Ce urmează? (pron.)
What happened? Ce s-a întâmplat? (pron.)

Which (of) - Care?/Pe care?

 Foloseşte-l pentru persoane, lucruri şi animale.
 Ţine minte că implică întotdeauna o selecţie.

Which of you will go with me?
Which of these apples do you prefer? Ce/Care măr preferi din acestea?
Which text must I read? Pe care dintre texte trebuie să-l citesc?

Laura: Eva, what are your plans for the coming weekend?
Eva: I’ll go to the seaside with Maria and Lisa.
Laura: What will you go by?
Eva: We’ll go by car and return by train. You see, Diana is going by car to the seaside, together with her husband, for a holiday, and they’re taking us with them, in their car. But as we’re returning Sunday evening we’ll have to return by train. We’ll leave Bucharest on Friday afternoon and we’ll reach the seaside resort Neptun in the evening.
Laura: How will you spend your two days there?
Eva: Well, we’ll get up fairly early in the morning. We’ll have breakfast at our hotel and then we’ll go to the beach to lie in the sun on the beach or in a deck chair. We’ll lie in the sun for a couple of hours and after that we’ll do some bathing and swimming in the sea or a swimming pool if the sea is too cold. I like to swim and I swim very well.
Laura: Will you also stop at Mamaia?
Eva: No, because we’ll have to be at the restaurant of our hotel in time for lunch.
Laura: What will you do in the afternoons?
Eva: On Saturday afternoon Diana and Alec will drive us to Mamaia to show us the big hotels and restaurants, the open-air theatres and cinemas there, and to take a walk along the coast of the sea. Then we’ll have dinner at one of the restaurants in Mamaia. On Sunday afternoon, Diana and Alec will drive us for a while up and down the coast of the Black Sea to see the seaside resorts.
Laura: Will you take the train for Bucharest from Mangalia?
Eva: Yes. And we’ll be back home not too late in the evening, in order to go to bed early enough, as we’ll have to get up very early on Monday morning to be able to get to our jobs in time.
Laura: By the way, what are your plans for this summer?
Eva: Well. I think I’ll go to a health resort in August.
Laura: I will go to a mountain resort. Perhaps we may go to the same place together.
Eva: Why not? We’ll speak on the phone about it. Bye-bye!
Laura: Bye-bye, Eva.

There are one thousand years in a millennium, one hundred years in a century and ten years in a decade.
A year has 12 months or 52 weeks. The names of the months of the year are of Latin origin: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December. A month has 30 or 31 days. February has 28 days in an ordinary year and 29 days in a leap year.
There are four weeks in a month, fourteen days and nights in a fortnight and seven days in a week: six week (working) days and a holiday. The names of the days of the week are of English (Saxon) origin: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The day before today is yesterday and the day before yesterday is called the day before yesterday; the day after today is tomorrow and the day after tomorrow is called the day after tomorrow.
A day has 24 hours. The moments of the day are morning, noon (midday), afternoon, evening, midnight and night.
There are two twelve-hour periods in a day. They are a.m. (in the morning), and p.m. (in the afternoon).
We can tell the time by a clock or a watch.
An hour has 60 minutes and a minute has 60 seconds. There are 30 minutes in a half an hour and 15 minutes in a quarter of an hour.

Ann: Have you got a watch?
Bob: Yes, I have.
Ann: What time is it by your watch?
Bob: By my watch it is twenty-five to two, but my watch is fast. It is five minutes fast. The clock on the wall is right.
Ann: So, the right time is half past one. What day is today? (What’s the date today?)
Bob: Today is sixteenth of August 1999. It’s August 16th, 1999.
Ann: When is your birthday?
Bob: It’s on the 27th of December.
Ann: What’s today? (What day is it?)
Bob: It’s Monday. Today is Monday.
Ann: When have you got your English classes?
Bob: We’ve got our English classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5 o’clock in the afternoon.

Numeralul ordinal

the seven + th = the seven th

 Excepţie fac primul, al doilea, al treilea.

the first the eleventh the twenty-first
the second the twelfth the thirtieth
the third the thirteenth the thirty-second
the fourth the fourteenth the fortieth
the fifth the fifteenth the forty-third
the sixth the sixteenth the fiftieth
the seventh the seventeenth the sixty-seventh
the eighth the eighteenth the seventieth
the ninth the nineteenth the eighty-sixth
the tenth the twentieth the ninety-fifth

the one hundredth the one thousandth
the one hundred and first the one thousand and second
the two hundredth the two thousandth
the four hundred and seventh the one millionth
the five hundredth the one billionth

al 1998 lea the one thousand nine hundred and ninety eighth

 Pune înaintea numeralul ordinal articolul hotărât “the”.
 Când scrii prescurtat păstreză doar ultimele litere ale numeralului ordinal: the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd, the 4th, the 21st, the 33rd, the 67th, the 124th.

22 Decembrie the 22nd of December, December the 22nd, December 22
26 Iunie the 26th of June, June the 26th, June 26
19 Ianuarie the 19th of January, January 19th, January 19

 Când exprimi ora, foloseşte sistemul cu 12 ore, decât cel cu 24 ore.
 Distincţia între dimineaţă, după-amiază şi seară o faci adăugând “a.m.” sau “p.m”, sau foloseşte “in the morning” (dimineaţa), “in the afternoon” (după-amiaza) şi “in the evening” (seara).

It’s 2 p.m. It’s two o’clock in the afternoon.
It’s 6 a.m. It’s 6 o’clock in the morning.

 Iată câteva expresii folositoare:

What time is it? It’s 11 p.m.
Do you have the time? Yes, it’s 12 at noon.
What time do they arrive? Around 3 p.m.
How much time does it take? No more than 20 minutes.

 Când exprimi orele fixe adaugâ lângă oră O’CLOCK.

It’s o’clock.

It’s two o’clock.

It’s five (minutes) past two.
It’s ten (minutes) past two.
It’s fifteen (minutes) past two.
It’s a quarter past two.
It’s twenty (minutes) past two.
It’s twenty-five (minutes) past two.
It’s half past two.

It’s twenty-five (minutes) to three.
It’s twenty (minutes) to three.
It’s fifteen (minutes) to three.
It’s a quarter to three.
It’s ten (minutes) to three.
It’s five (minutes) to three.
It’s three o’clock.

It’s 3:25. It’s three twenty-five.
It’s 8:30. It’s eight thirty.
It’s 10:45. It’s ten forty-five.

 LEO
the Lion, July 23 – Aug. 22 The sun rules Leo, which is a fire sign. Astrologers believe that Leos have regal, self-centered, generous, and warm-hearted natures. Protective of people close to them, they need to be the center of attention and can be inordinately fond of praise. Creative and dramatic, they are natural leaders who love to enjoy themselves.

I cannot be your friend and your flatterer too.
Everything is good in its season.
Think twice before you speak once.
Speak well of your friend, of your enemy say nothing.
Hope is a good breakfast, but a bad supper.
Never too old to learn.
